For the first time, a book has been assembled to provide a comprehensive overview of the freight equipment used by the Soo Line railroad from the early 1900s into the 2000s.

This 152-page hardbound 8 1/2” x 11” volume is printed entirely in color on heavy glossy coated paper. More than 550 black and white or color photographs are arranged in order by acquisition date for each car type. Many of these are builders’ photos from American Car and Foundry, Pullman Car & Manufacturing Co., Pullman-Standard, and the Soo Line Railroad.

Photographs were contributed from collections of 90 individuals, museums, and historical society archives. Each is accompanied by descriptive information about number series and, almost always, by Soo Line car diagram numbers.

Caption material, section headings and sidebars were provided by some of the best-known individuals in their areas of specialization. An introduction covers a brief history of the Soo Line railroad. Notes on numbering, painting and lettering are also included.

Finally, suggestions are made for additional reading in terms of books and extensive freight car-related articles from the SOO, quarterly publication of the Soo Line Historical and Technical Society.
